Types of Websites

 

A mini site: A mini site has slightly more pages, usually about 5. This type of site is commonly used by small businesses to build an online presence. The site normally includes a homepage, a page about their services and products, a contact page, and maybe a pricing or rates page. These are also commonly known as brochure type websites.  3-6 pages

 

A content site: A content site is just what the name implies. It's a site filled with content. Example content sites include news sites, article sites, how to sites … Many content sites offers visitors various ways to interact with the site. You could comments on their articles, for example, or rate them and cast your votes.  6 pages and up

 

A blog: This is a smaller version of a content site. You’ve probably visited many of these. The distinguishing feature of blog site is the way content is added chronologically. (can be added to any of the sites above as an additional feature)

 

An ecommerce site: This site consists mainly of a shopping cart that showcases products. Visitors can price and purchase products online.

 

 

Search Engine Optimization

 

Many Business do a great job of having a website built but don't understand that this is only helpful is if the website can be found by the customer on the internet. The number one way people find products and services is through Search Engines such as Yahoo, Google, Lycos, Bing etc.

 

Not every site is created equal  Not all designers offer SEO and many great websites are lost in a sea of other websites. The way your site is coded contributes to where you will site in the search engine rankings. Strategic placement of key words and phrases along with hierarchy coding allows the search engines to rank your page above the others.

Along with coding the site correctly the site must also be physically submitted to the search engines. If the Search Engine doesn't know your site is out there how can it rank it?

 

For Example

Brophy Realty has some basic SEO included in their site. If I was looking for realtors in Wray, Colorado I would go to a site like Google.com and type something like... realtors wray colorado. If you try this you will see that not only does Brophy Realty show up but it hold the number one slot. Out of 265,000 sites with the right SEO coding Brophy Realty is on top of the Search Engine Ranking.

Client Updateability

 

Client updatability is in high demand.  Many clients want to be able to make changes to their content with out the help of a web designer.

 

All to often I see designers offer expensive and complicated content management systems to do so. Some of the content management systems even require the client to learn some basic html to use them. Not easy by any means.

 

There are other options!  I utilize a great suite of industry standard Adobe products, one of which I offer to my clients. With a program called Adobe Contribute clients can update their sites quickly and easily. It's as simple as Microsoft Word and requires no programming experience at all. The best part is it cost hundreds of dollars less to implement into a website than traditional content management solutions.

 

You will actually own Adobe Contribute. Many times content management systems are owned and maintained by the designer. With Adobe Contribute you own the product and have the option to use it on as many sites as you need. For the money, you cant beat Adobe Contribute.
